01What is Lively Wallpaper?

Lively Wallpaper is a free, open-source application for Windows that lets you use animated content as your desktop background. Unlike static wallpapers, Lively supports GIF files, MP4 and WebM videos, YouTube videos, web pages, and even interactive shaders — all running live on your desktop.

✓ 100% Free
✓ Open Source
✓ GIF Support
✓ MP4 / WebM
✓ YouTube URLs
✓ Multi-Monitor
✓ Low CPU Usage
✓ Windows 10/11
⚠️ Note: Lively Wallpaper works alongside Rainmeter. You can run both at the same time — Lively handles the animated background, Rainmeter handles the widgets on top.

02How to Install Lively Wallpaper

1
Open Microsoft Store

Press Win and search for "Microsoft Store". Open it.

2
Search for Lively Wallpaper

Type "Lively Wallpaper" in the search bar. Look for the app by rocksdanister — it has a blue wave icon.

3
Click Get / Install

The app is completely free. Click Get and wait for it to download — it's under 50MB.

4
Launch Lively

Open Lively from the Start menu. On first launch it will add a small icon to your system tray and open the main library window.

💡 Tip: Alternatively, download directly from GitHub: github.com/rocksdanister/lively — useful if you can't access the Microsoft Store.

03How to Add a Wallpaper

Lively supports multiple ways to add wallpapers. The easiest is drag and drop.

1
Open the Lively window

Click the Lively icon in your system tray, or find it in the Start menu.

2
Drag your file into Lively

Drag a GIF, MP4, or WebM file from File Explorer directly onto the Lively window. A dialog will appear asking for a title and description — these are optional.

3
Click OK

Lively adds the wallpaper to your library and sets it as your background immediately.

4
Double-click to switch

To switch between wallpapers in your library, just double-click any thumbnail.

04Use a YouTube Video as Wallpaper

1
Copy the YouTube URL

Go to any YouTube video and copy the URL from the address bar (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxx).

2
Open Lively's "Add Wallpaper" dialog

In the Lively window, click the + button or drag the URL directly onto the window.

3
Paste the URL

Paste the YouTube URL into the input field and click OK. Lively will load the video as a wallpaper.

4
Mute the audio

Right-click the wallpaper in your library → Audio → Mute. Most people prefer silent desktop wallpapers.

💡 Tip: For the best quality, use YouTube videos that are 1080p or 4K, looped, and have no intro/outro — ambient or loop videos work best as wallpapers.

05Use a GIF or MP4 from RainmeterPRO

1
Download the wallpaper

Browse our Wallpapers section and click Download on any wallpaper you like. You'll get a GIF or MP4 file.

2
Drag into Lively

Drag the downloaded file onto the Lively window. Add a title and click OK.

3
Set as background

It will be added to your library and set as your desktop background automatically.

4
Loop settings

For MP4 files, Lively loops them automatically. For GIFs, looping depends on the GIF itself — most animated wallpaper GIFs are already set to loop infinitely.

06Multi-Monitor Setup

Lively fully supports multiple monitors. Each screen can have a different wallpaper.

1
Open Settings

In Lively, click the gear icon → Settings → Wallpaper.

2
Set display mode

Choose "Per Display" to set different wallpapers on each monitor, or "Span" to stretch one wallpaper across all screens.

3
Set wallpaper per monitor

In your library, right-click any wallpaper → Set Wallpaper → choose which monitor to apply it to.

💡 Tip: Use a static or very subtle wallpaper on your secondary monitor and save the animated one for your primary screen — this keeps performance high.

07Performance Settings

Live wallpapers use some CPU and GPU. Here are the best settings to keep Lively running smoothly.

Recommended Settings (Settings → Performance)
Playback when maximized Pause — saves the most CPU when you're working
Playback on battery Pause — extends laptop battery significantly
Playback on focus Pause — stops when any window is in focus (most aggressive saving)
App rules Add your most-used apps to always pause the wallpaper when they're open
⚠️ Note: GIF wallpapers use almost no GPU since they're rendered by the CPU. MP4/WebM wallpapers use the GPU for hardware decoding — this is usually very efficient on modern systems.

08FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lively Wallpaper free?

Yes — completely free and open source. No subscriptions, no premium version. Available on the Microsoft Store and GitHub.

Does Lively Wallpaper work on Windows 11?

Yes, fully compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit).

Does it slow down my PC?

Lively is designed to be efficient. With the "Pause when maximized" setting enabled, it uses virtually no resources while you're working. A GIF wallpaper typically uses under 1% CPU.

Can I use Lively and Rainmeter at the same time?

Yes — they're completely independent. Lively runs the animated background; Rainmeter overlays widgets on top. Both can run simultaneously with no conflicts.

The wallpaper looks stretched / wrong aspect ratio

Right-click the wallpaper in your library → Layout → choose Fit, Fill, or Stretch to match your screen resolution.

Can I set a YouTube video without ads?

Lively uses YouTube's embedded player, which may show ads depending on your account. Using the YouTube URL of a video you own or a Creative Commons video avoids most issues.

Where does Lively store wallpaper files?

By default: C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Local\Lively Wallpaper. You can change this in Settings → General → Wallpaper Directory.

How do I uninstall Lively?

Go to Windows Settings → Apps → find Lively Wallpaper → Uninstall. Your wallpaper files in the Lively directory remain unless you delete that folder manually.
